Granite Lecture and Film Series Presents “Rail to the Granite Mountain,” a Talk by Paul Wood

Join the Vermont Granite Museum for an engaging lecture by Paul Wood, a writer and historian who composes columns about the Vermont Granite industry for the Times Argus. In the late nineteenth century, the shortline Hardwick & Woodbury Railroad transformed the farming village of Hardwick into a vibrant industrial center featuring the largest building, granite quarrying, and finishing operations in the country. At the time of the railroad’s construction, the quarries on Robeson Mountain in Woodbury were the highest points in Vermont reached by rail, and its steep roadbed grades required the use of powerful geared Shay Locomotives. Questions and discussion will follow the lecture.
